Summer Wraps in Silk and Felt June 7th & 8th, 2008

All levels welcome - Laminated Felt, sometimes called "Nuno" felt, creates wonderful gathered effects with sheer fabrics, especially silks. The addition of fabric layers also makes a thinner, more drapable felt, perfect for clothing. Laminated felt wraps are perfect for spring and summer airconditioning - just a touch of warmth. In this class, we will experiment with laminated felt effects with silk scarves and other evening wraps. Material Fee of $36 PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at time of class.
Felt Projects for the Home - July 1-29
6pm-9:30pm (Tues. nights)
If your home is your work of art, you will appreciate having another fiber technique for contrast and impact. Felted items in the home add color and texture and are amazingly quick and easy to make and care for. Among the many applications you will learn are table runners, placemats, wall hangings, pillows, lampshades, tea cosies, oven mitts and even curtains! During this 5 session course, you will make up to 5 items and have the knowledge to make many more at home.Ý Beginners and experienced felters are welcome.ÝBring your own felting tools or beginners can buy a toolkit at the class. ÝMaterials fee isÝ$24 materials fee + $10 toolkit (beginners) PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR.ÝWool is included in the materials fee.
Felt Projects in Wool & Sterling - June 18-July 23

Felting creates a rich, textured surface which looks marvelous with closuresÝ of smooth, reflective materials like sterling silver. This class is planned to partner with Susan Saul'sÝ Wednesday morning class, Introduction to Metalsmithing for Fiber Artists, but you can also design your pieces with pins, clasps and closures found elsewhere. First, we will make a shawl or capelet planned for a pin or pennanular as a closure. Then, we will move into seamless techniques to create a purse which you will finish with a metalwork handle. Beginners and experienced felters are welcome.ÝBring your own felting tools or beginners can buy a toolkit at the class. ÝMaterials fee isÝ$14 materials fee + $10 toolkit (beginners) PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR.ÝWool is included in the materials fee.

Introduction to Wet Felting Workshop
Class Description:
Fun, easy, inexpensive, portable and nearly foolproof, Felting is the perfect craft. For decorating accents, gifts, clothing and accessories and fine art pieces, Felting gives miraculous results, even for beginners. In this Introduction class, Day 1, you will learn how to find, choose and buy wool, how to set up a felting area in your home and and how to make a flat piece for a table runner, and how turn it into a small purse with a felted cord. On Day 2, you will learn about seamless felting, which makes a whole array of pieces possible, and you will make a clutch purse You will go home with the knowledge and tools to make felt items at home, with links and reference book lists for support.

Schedule:

Day 1 -
Introduction to wool and felting
How to find, choose and buy wool in person and online
How to setup a felting area
Basic felting demonstration
Students make a sample

Students make a flat piece
Students make a felted cord
How to finish and assemble the purse
Discussion about closures

Day 2 -
Discussion about Seamless felting
Demonstration of felting around a pattern

Students make a pattern for a small, seamless object
Students layout, felt and full the object
Discussion about fulling and finishing object
Discussion about resources online, wool festivals and book list

Supply list for students:

heavy household gloves, suitable for hot water
1 cellulose sponge
4 old bath towels
1 bar olive oil soap (Kiss My Face recommended), and plastic storage dish
1- 2 cup+ spray bottle (should be capable of an even light spray)
1 - 4 cup plastic container with lid
scissors
tape measure
comfortable, cushioned shoes - you'll be standing quite a bit
